| Description
|
Vivian Bearing, a 50 year-old English lecturer, is a professor of poetry specialising in the difficult sonnets of the metaphysical poet of the 17th Century, John Donne. The piece begins with Vivian’s admission to a hospital where she undergoes chemotherapy sessions, the only alternative that remains with her illness at its terminal stage. Despite sensing the proximity of death, she does not despair and she deals with her experience "with great sarcasm and sense of humour". Poetry is a central aspect of her monologues; she speaks of poetry whenever she can and with it she analyses everything that happens.
Gradually Vivian assumes the condition of “object” to which she is reduced by the medical treatment. Although she expresses the need to explain in words that is happening to her, she can no longer find the necessary passages from the poetry of Donne that had served her over the course of her life as a medium for understanding.
Rosa Maria Sardá returns to the stage following a three-and-a-half year absence and returns to the Teatro Cervantes following the suspension of this play caused by the terrorist attacks of 11th March 2004 in Madrid, playing the part of a university lecturer who is fighting against ovarian cancer in metastasis phase.
Wit is the play with which Margaret Edson -teacher at a primary school in Atlanta (Georgia) who also worked in a hospital cancer and AIDS research unit- won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1999. Wit was made into a film by director Mike Nichols with Emma Thompson in the role of the protagonist. Recently, the Piccolo Teatro Studio premiered an opera based on the same text, already performed in the United States. |
