The renowned soprano María José Moreno will sing her first zarzuela in our city with this Caserío of Guridi, a title which gets its fame from one of its parts: “Con el trébole”. This Teatro Arriaga production will mark the end of the season and will include a beautiful score for soprano, delightful choruses and several dances.
The rich musical tradition of the Basque Country has been characterised over the generations by its delight in popular music. Jesús Guridi, descendant of a family of musicians, enjoyed an ample musical education. He left a significant legacy of chamber, symphonic and, of course, vocal music, most notably his Mirentxu and Amaya operas in which, as in his zarzuelas, the musician endeavoured to combine his European learning and his various influences (including the Wagnerian) with folkloric Basque traditions.
In the lyrical field his path led him towards the zarzuela, excelling with his production of El caserío with libretto by F. Romero and G. Fernández Shaw, famed for their Doña Francisquita. Centred on the caserío (farm house) of Sasibill, El caserío is a portrayal of Basque customs in which a simple but heartfelt love story unfolds around the country house which encompasses the broad and familiar Basque concept. The popular songs, its music, dances and the typical Basque instruments are used with great skill in this comedy. |
