The Italian soprano Mariella Devia (Chiusavecchia, Imperia, Italy, 1948) is one of the world’s greats. Time passes and la Devia still has the vocal qualities that have made her a celebrity. She is queen of bel canto, resting her interpretations on two pillars: exhaustive knowledge of the score which allows her, with absolute respect, to exploit all of the expressive possibilities of the piece, and the internalisation of the character. She bases her work on experience, constant study and the will to go further and avoid becoming comfortable. Mariella Devia is conscious of her potential and also of her limitations; this is the key to her greatness. Her long breath line and her exemplary phrasing and diction make her singing a constant master class.
