| Description

Part of the repertoire of lyrical seasons in nearly every opera theatre in the world, La sonnambula has a merciless score for the tenor and its notes include some of the most beautiful arias ever written for soprano. The stage production programmed is Alessandro Sanquirico’s original, written for the opera’s debut in 1831 in Milan.
The first of Bellini’s three great operas. The libretto, pastoral and idyllic, was supplied by F. Romani and is based on Eugène Scribe’s ballet-pantomime La sonnambule ou l’arrivée d’un nouveau seigneur, although with numerous modifications. In this opera the Sicilian musician gives vent to all of his melodic and lyrical ardour, creating the famous arias which are considered to be the longest and sweetest that the human mind can create. The orchestral accompaniments are very simple, perfectly adapted to the type of composition.
The title already reveals the element which provides an unusual aspect to the opera’s plot: Amina is caught during the night in Count Rodolfo’s bedroom, giving rise to dishonourable suspicions which are soon dispelled when it becomes clear that she is a sleepwalker. This fact is confirmed, according to theatrical tradition, by the sufferer sleepwalking through a dangerous looking place: a precarious footbridge, for example. The kindly image painted of the villagers’ simplicity is a kind of “serious” addition to the portrayal. |
