Juan Diego Florez (Lima, Peru, 13th January 1973), is considered by Luciano Pavarotti to be his worthy successor. In addition to being an excellent bel canto singer, is also the most highly praised tenor on the lyrical scene. For Florez, singing well means choosing a repertoire of difficult operas that many other tenors choose not to perform, so it comes as no surprise that his concert schedule is completely full for the next ten years. Those that follow his work agree that he possesses a unique and extraordinary talent, while a significant number of critics already point to him as the world's best tenor.
His early days in Lima were spent with a series of maestros that all acknowledged his remarkable capacity for bel canto singing and encouraged him to progressively pursue his career in the field. Almost without wanting to do so, a 23 year old Juan Diego Florez became a smashing success story when he filled in for Bruce Ford at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro and caused a sensation in the role of Corradino in Matilde de Shabran. That same year he made his debut at La Scala in Milan as the Danish Knight in Glück's Armide. From then on, he started appearing at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera, the New York Metropolitan…
He received the Abbiati Prize in 2000 (given by Italian critics to the singer of the year), the Rossini d’oro, the Premio Aureliano Pertile, the Tamagno Prize and the L’Opera Award (Migliore Tenore) for his 2001 performance in La Sonnambula at La Scala. In 2001he signed with Decca and since then he has released four CD’s of solo recitals on the Decca label: Rossini Arias, which won the 2003 Cannes Classical Award, Una Furtiva Lagrima, which won the 2004 Cannes Classical Award, Great Tenor Arias (2005), and Sentimiento Latino (2006), a recital with classical songs from popular Latin American music. |
