The Brno National Opera maintains an intense lyrical season at the Janacek Theatre at the Czech city, with regular opera and ballet companies. During its extensive tour of Spain stopping at nice cities, it will offer us this difficult production known for its famous barcarole and long list of soloists.
A tribute to the German writer and composer Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann (1776-1882), admired profoundly by Offenbach. His works occupy a prominent place in German romanticism and his is a famous “romantic” interpretation of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. It is no surprise, then, that Hoffman ends up as protagonist of one of his operas. Hoffman himself appears as narrator in the prologue and epilogue and the three acts which run between them narrate three more stories in which he tells us of the various loves of the author.
Offenbach died before completing his work, but E. Giraud (1837-1892) orchestrated it and added the recitatives, as he did with Bizet’s Carmen. However, in recent times there has been a tendency to omit the recitatives and substitute them with spoken dialogue, as was the intention of Offenbach. Despite being the most ambitious opera, containing many fresh and pleasing pages, it is not the most successful work of the composer who was one of the originators of the operetta. It does contain, however, the seeds of what would become the new opéra-comique, which, abandoning the habitual canaille genre, looks for touching lyrical dramatic characters full of lively humanity. |
