|
In Mozart’s era it was usual to commission the composers to write the scores for the choral parts of mass, always with the same texts and structure. Mass in C major, Kv 317 was completed in March 1779 in Salzburg when the composer was at the service of the Prince-Archbishop of the Austrian city from which he wanted to free himself, and when he had just lost the opportunity to gain access to the positions of court composer in Mannheim and Paris.
As regards “Coronation Mass”, although there is some discussion, it is believed that Mozart composed it for the Easter Resurrection Mass of 1779, although later it would be used for other occasions. |
