Dolphin watching excursions have been operating here since
1991 and many of the local species are recognized individually.
Fed by two small rivers, and being fairly well sheltered,
Dolphin Bay plays host to countless species of marine
life, and is a nature lover's paradise. It is a natural
nursery for dolphins, where many young can be seen, particularly
during the summer months, in their natural environment.
Over the last 12 years, you have been able to watch both
Common and Striped dolphins on almost every trip. Less
often seen here are the larger Bottlenose dolphins. These
are the ones most people imagine when thinking about dolphins.
(Incidently, the dolphins kept in captivity are usually
Bottlenose.) The Bottlenose dolphins pop into the Bay
now and again, as do the Pilot whales and Orcas. We have
also seen Sperm whales passing through the Straits of
Gibraltar, and this spring the Sperm whales were particularly
impressive! A group of 6 stayed in this area for several
days, much to our delight! For several years, we have
been able to watch Fin whales at very close quarters when
they "take up residence" in the Bay for their summer holidays.
This year, Phillip and his passengers were treated to
a very rare sight here: a fin whale and her newborn calf.
The Straits of Gibraltar, passing between the Pillars
of Hercules, is a major highway on the migration route
of whales, as it is the only entrance / exit between the
Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic
