It has been a popular marketing angle for many years now that one of the great things about living on the Costa del Sol is that you can go skiing in the morning and be on the beach by late afternoon, and with a bit of planning it is actually possible.

By taking the A-92 inland to Granada you should be able to reach the Sierra Nevada, or more accurately the village of Pradollano, in around two hours of leaving Malaga. The Sierra Nevada Ski Resort is located in the municipal area of Monachil, and in order to get there you'll need to take the highest road in Europe. Parking in the village is easy primarily as a result of the vast underground car park (the largest in Spain apparently), which can be found at the entrance to Pradollano itself.

At an altitude of 2.100 metres, Pradollano has plenty of accommodation options to suit all budgets, ranging from the 4-Star Melia Sierra Nevada and Sol y Nieve Hotels down to 2-star rated hostels. If you're not bothered particularly about staying in the village, we'd suggest you try the Hotel El Guerra, which is located about 10 minutes from Pradollano on the road up to the village. The hotel is 3-star rated and represents very good value for money.

All the principal skiing areas can be accessed from the centre of the village and there are 79 slopes to choose from offering 84 kms of runs. Pradollano isn't a big resort but it offers excellent facilities for skiers of all levels as well as non-skiers and families visiting just to enjoy the snow. There is also a nursery located near the main ski lifts for parents wishing to leave the kids somewhere safe while they go off and enjoy themselves. You won't struggle finding somewhere to eat either with more than 30 bars and restaurants to choose from. Many of the local bars provide a sizeable, not to mention tasty, tapa with each round of drinks that you order so you won't go hungry!
